If you're within the range of the black puffin (and that range is expanding all the time - keep an eye on the species' eBird map to see where they've been found), you should be on the lookout; flocks to shallow ponds; walking on the small grass of the lawns and golf; and especially in the fields, where these large ducks eat a lot of grain. They eat at night, so they watch the sun go down if flocks of animals start flying in the field from their room. OTHER NAMES

Back-to-back tips

Black-billed ducks go to the nest box with a will. If you live within their limits, you can make a birdhouse out of half-inch plywood. It should be about 24 inches high at the front and 20 inches at the back, with a hole about 5-6 inches in diameter (see Bolen 1967 in the Credits section of this account for detailed instructions).

Interesting facts

Whistling ducks are known as wood ducks, but only a few, like black whistling ducks, are common or nest in trees. They are very similar to ducks, but lack dimorphism, long-lasting pairs of bonds, and lack complex mating behavior like geese and swans.

The oldest black-bellied duck on record was a male at least 10 years and 7 months old when he was found in 2015 in Louisiana. It was installed there in 2005.
